Patio Covers and Decks Built for Southern California

Outdoor structures here do not face the freeze-thaw cycle that wrecks them in colder states. What they face instead is relentless sun, long dry spells, occasional heavy rain and, in this part of the state, seismic movement. Those put the stress somewhere different: on the connections and on anything holding moisture where it cannot dry.

Posts and footings carry it. A post that sits directly on a slab wicks water at the base and stays damp under a bracket that never dries out; a post set on a standoff base stays clear of standing water and lasts. Footings need to be sized and set for the loads the cover actually carries, including the lateral loads that matter in seismic country.

The connection to the house is the other place these jobs are won or lost. A patio cover ledger fastened to the house has to hit real framing, and it has to be flashed so that water that gets behind it drains back out rather than into the wall. A ledger fastened into stucco alone is a leak with a schedule.

Beyond that it is span and sizing — beams and rafters chosen for the distance they actually cross, and a roof pitch that sheds the rain we do get.
